International gold medal win for Norton Estate
Horsham winery Norton Estate has claimed prestigious Australasian medals after an award ceremony at Sydney’s Marriott Hotel.
The 2009 Boutique Wine Awards are open to every boutique winery in Australia and New Zealand and are the highest honour a boutique winery can gain without competing against corporate wineries.
Norton Estate entered three wines among a total of 1100 entries at the awards and won medals for all three wines.
But the major award was for Norton’s flagship wine – the 2006 Arapiles Run Shiraz – which won a gold medal and second place in the Shiraz class, missing first place by just half a point.
The 2005 vintage of this elegant, superbly balanced Shiraz finished with a silver medal last year so the wine clearly keeps improving each vintage.
Norton Estate also entered popular vintages, the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2006 Estate Shiraz and both wines received bronze medals in hotly contested classes.
Norton Estate manager Chris Spence said many of Australia and New Zealand’s boutique wineries are considered world standard.
“To win such awards against the very best in these two countries is more than we could ever have hoped,” Mr. Spence said.
“Considering we are still only a fledgling winery with just six years of production, it is a fantastic result,” he said.
“Who knows what we can produce in the future when our vines have matured and we are no longer in drought.”
The Boutique Wine Awards are presented each year by the Association of Australian Boutique Winemakers. To be eligible for the awards, boutique wineries must produce and crush less than 250 tonnes of fruit annually.

Norton Estate has had its range of wines reviewed by Gary Walsh of The Wine Front , and were very happy with the resulting appraisals.
Our 2005 Arapiles Run Shiraz ended up with a terrific write up, a 95 point score and to finish it off Gary elevated it to the prestigious "wine of the month".
The other wines submitted all received excellent reviews and the ratings that Gary Walsh gave these wines are as follows:
2006 Arapiles run Shiraz ---93 points
2005 Arapiles Run Shiraz -- 95 points - (wine of the month)
2005 Shiraz ----------------92 points
2005 Cabernet Sauvignon-----91 points
2008 Sauvignon Blanc -------91 points
2004 Shiraz ----------------90 Points For detailed notes on these reviews visit - www.winefront.com.au
Another highlight that we have achieved was the inclusion of the 2004 Arapiles Run Shiraz into "James Halliday's Top 100 Wines" in 2006, alongside national treasures such as Penfolds Grange, something we are very proud of.
